“The first wiff, I had to look and make sure I had just opened a tequila bottle, after letting it breathe the flavors of this high proof came out. The agave is muted in the nose, but very forward on the taper and finish. I got some nutty flavor in the taste as well. Maybe pistachio less salt. Otherwise I found this an enjoyable high proof that I will gladly share with friends. ”

“This is a fun bottle. However past the nose on this it is too sweet. The aroma is fun and has a light agave and a fruity, peppery smell that is blended with other caramel and vanilla with fruit hiding in the wings. The taste has no agave and is a very light caramel and vanilla flavor masked by cinnamon, a mint and maybe even licorice. It is a little overwhelming and ruins the finish too, which is just a peppery lingering flavor. Beautiful bottle though. ”

The taste is more complex, shifting to a cooked agave flavor and adding floral and citrus notes with a smooth finish that was very enjoyable. Kudos to G4 on winning me over to a Blanco that will stay upfront for sipping. ”

“The bite of alcohol is the most consistent on any Añejo that I have had. Present on the nose, the tounge and tapers off nicely in the finish. The nose has agave and spice, as well as a metered caramel and vanilla presence. The taste of this brings the complexity out as the flavors have light spice notes that range from pepper to barrel spice which accompanies subtle barrel infusion from the bourbon barrels I assume this was aged in. I will be replenishing this expression as it far outclasses the EA. ”

“I honestly feel there needs to be a new category of tequila that put some of these into the desert wine type of category. Anyhow the entire experience lacks agave. The nose has caramel and the taste is super sweet and spicy. The cinnamon and spices coupled with the sweetness wants me to be sitting at a fireplace while the snow is falling. My notes of the aroma and taste were fairly consistent with the popular selection. The price really ends up being for the fancy bottle with is eye catching. Just wish the drink didn’t leave an incredibly sweet aftertaste that made me feel like I poured simple syrup on my tongue ten minute later. ”

“The nose of this is sweet. Caramel came out of the bottle and grabbed me. Also agave and pepper are present. Tasting this is a bit different. It is bitter and earthy, with a bit of vanilla, oak, and whiskey (which came out after several pulls). Not as smooth as desired for the price point. Also not the worst Añejo either. ”

Hiatus Tequila Añejo

“The aroma on this was amazing. The remainder of the experience fell far from that. The taste was too bitter for me and the finish was heavy on alcohol aftertaste. The aroma was a strong mix of raw agave (very earthy, wet, and laced with citrus and florals) along with a light oak. The taste had almost no agave in it. I had a hard time with what felt like a battle between mint, cinnamon, and pepper and the butterscotch-caramel competition. The aftertaste again had a heavy alcohol component that wasn’t really present elsewhere. That transitioned to a sweet floral/butterscotch combo that tapers into a feeling that you have a bit of syrup on your tongue. Don’t get me wrong. This is complex, just a little too all over the place on the taste/finish. ”

El Ateo Añejo Ultra Premium

“ The nose hits with what I first thought was cherry, then fruity, and finally settled on an apple dominant aroma. So maybe a fruity nose with light agave, oak, and a hint of leather for me. The taste is more agave, oak, and vanilla. Also, a little bit of Funky fruit comes out. The light sweetness keeps the funk muted, but I could get to it still. The caramel is muted, and the finish is peppery and tapers out to a sweet aftertaste. Super impressed with this. The Añejo label I got isn’t on the El Ateo website or in AMM, I think what they changed was the text under Añejo under the brand title centered on the label reads “100% Agave Azul” vs Ultra Premium text which I see everywhere else. ”
